The 6th annual UNDERTOW CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC returns February 5, 2024!
San Diego Parks Foundation is very excited to be hosting the 6th Annual Undertow Charity Golf Classic on February 5th, 2024!
Why do we do it?
Great parks are the mark of a great city. Parks improve our physical and mental health, reduce pollution and crime, and bring people together to build more resilient, socially connected communities. But not every San Diegan has access to a quality park. The San Diego Parks Foundation works every day to change that.
Our Mission: To improve the quality of life of communities throughout the city of San Diego through equitable investments in parks, greenspace, and recreational opportunities.
Our Vision: Every San Diegan has access to quality recreational facilities as part of a safe, healthy, resilient, and thriving community.
With proceeds from past Undertow events, we have raised over $232,000 and accomplished the following:
Provided free or reduced-cost swimming lessons for more than 5,000 children from lower income neighborhoods
Installed free WiFi at 60 recreation centers and pools to address issues of digital equity & access
Have planted 350 trees in parks that lack shade through our urban greening initiative
Park Ambassador Program launched in 2022; 50 young adults have graduated, and more than half started their first paid position working for the City of San Diego.
Created summer initiatives through Come Play Outside and Parks After Dark that funds safe and culturally relevant summer activities for kids and families in neighborhoods with high crime rates and economic hardship. The primary goal is to create welcoming spaces where communities have access to free recreation and entertainment programs, health and social services resources and physical and activity opportunities. These programs have served more than 50,000 people in just two years demonstrating the need and desire to engage.
Funded many infrastructure projects that have improved park assets such as sports fields & courts that were worn-out and now are valued community assets.

The San Diego Parks Foundation will hold the 6th Annual Undertow Charity Classic at the world-famous Torrey Pines municipal golf course in La Jolla. Thanks to the leadership of the Development and Projects Committee, this event will be incredible! The tournament includes the North and South Course, and a celebration of our sixth anniversary with an acknowledgement of those who have shared their time, talent, and treasure to help make the San Diego Parks Foundation’s first five years a huge success.

Inclusion in this event as a sponsor provides exposure to a desirable demographic of 200 active and educated individuals with disposable income. Sponsorship signage on the courses and carts will remain for the day providing additional exposure to up to 300 non-tournament golfers with afternoon tee times.
This event sells out every year. Several sponsorship levels include free tournament entries, and these can be used at your discretion – employee appreciation, client appreciation, employee contests, social media contests, family, friends, yourself – it’s up to you!
Why "The Undertow"?
During the CBS broadcast of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, announcer Gary McCord made notice that Hole No.'s 2, 3 and 4 on The North Course played among the third most-difficult on the PGA TOUR for the season (that includes the South Course).
At that point, course management decided to have fun with the interesting stat and create a naming contest. "The Green Mile," "The Bear Trap," and "The Blue Monster" now have some company. The North Course’s newly-famed three-hole stretch was named "The Undertow" by San Diego resident Peter Look, who prevailed in a summer 2018 contest featuring over 400 entries to grace the difficult holes with an appropriate moniker.
