WHEREAS, May 13th, 2023, will be recognized as “I Love My Park Day” in the City of San Diego, California, USA; and

WHEREAS, The San Diego Parks Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and the capital assets of park and recreation resources for the City of San Diego’s residents through the activation of her parks in collaboration with Mayor Gloria, City Councilmembers, the Park and Recreation Department, and our non-profit partners, among others; and

WHEREAS, great parks are the hallmark of all great cities; and

WHEREAS, parks improve our physical and mental health, reduce pollution and crime, and bring people together to build more resilient, socially connected communities; and

WHEREAS, The City of San Diego has more than 40,000 acres of park assets including 440 parks and 60 recreation centers and includes but is not limited to everything from tot lots to neighborhood parks, to regional parks, open space, canyons, beaches, bays, pools, dog parks, golf courses, skateboard parks, historic and cultural sites; and

WHEREAS, The San Diego Parks Foundation is committed to bringing high quality services, programing, and capital improvements in partnership with the City of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation Department Staff to our residents; and

WHEREAS, The San Diego Parks Foundation is further committed to providing those resources to the entire City of San Diego Park System while striving to provide equity to our older neglected park resources; and

WHEREAS, parks and recreation activities and resources offer people of all ages and abilities opportunities to come together for everything from educational experiences, to quiet contemplation, to picnics and pickup games, to organized sports and swimming, to therapeutic activities that heal minds and bodies, and every kind of activity imaginable; and

WHEREAS, parks provide serenity and inspiration just by being outdoors in nature; and

WHEREAS, parks provide a sense of pride in our community as a place to live work and play; and

WHEREAS, The San Diego Parks Foundation is dedicated alongside the City’s Parks and Recreation Department and its staff in keeping our parks clean, safe, and beautiful for all residents to enjoy; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of San Diego, does hereby proclaim May 13th, 2023 “I Love My Park Day” in the City of San Diego and urges all residents to celebrate “I Love My Parks Day” by enjoying time in one of San Diego’s beautiful and unique parks.
